“The Future of the Future” / Reinventando Narrativas de África”. A Conferência do MFF 2018 conta com a participação de 16 oradores nacionais e internacionais. O objectivo da conferência é permitir uma reflexão e um debate em torno do tema proposto com base nas apresentações dos oradores convidados.

A Conferência (e o programa) do MFF 2018 tem como tema “The Future of the Future” / Reinventando Narrativas de África”.
Em anos recentes, tem-se assistido, através de múltiplas e variadas manifestações – teóricas, filosóficas, estéticas, económicas, sociais e culturais – à emergência de um “desejo de futuro”, cujo denominador comum passa por uma vontade expressa em conceptualizar novas formulações identitárias, gerar imaginários alternativos e construir narrativas que se destacam pela ruptura que pretendem instituír com os modelos que foram configurados no período pós-independências e parecem esgotados e incapazes de responder às novas realidades contemporâneas.
Existem inúmeros factores históricos que podem ajudar a compreender estas novas aspirações identitárias (falência de opções ideológicas, impactos da globalização, profundas mudanças tecnológicas, alterações demográficas e geracionais, etc.) mas o que importa talvez reter aqui é que, independentemente das diversas abordagens analíticas possíveis, o continente é hoje confrontado com uma pulsão em que, da moda às tecnologias, da literatura ao design, da arquitectura ao empreendedorismo, da música às artes visuais, para referir apenas alguns exemplos, há claramente um vibrante “regresso ao futuro”, isto é, uma inequívoca e inovadora vontade de ir além das convenções existentes e construír narrativas em que o “futuro” é convocado como uma poderosa ferramenta para gerar cenários conceptuais alternativos e afirmar novas dinâmicas identitárias.
As diversas e multifacetadas manifestações estéticas, culturais e artísticas que têm surgido, por exemplo, no âmbito do chamado “afrofuturismo” – apesar da imprecisão conceptual e ambivalência deste “movimento” – são eloquentes pela forma como exprimem este “desejo de futuro” e de reconfiguração identitária através da construção de novas narrativas.
É neste contexto que a Conferência (e o programa) do MFF 2018 se pretende situar. O seu objectivo é contribuir para que produção destas “novas narrativas” – indiferentemente da sua proveniência (artes visuais, design, arquitectura, tecnologia, literatura, etc.) – seja estimulada, exibida e publicamente debatida por forma a que, também em Moçambique, o exercício criativo que “pensar o futuro” convoca, se reflicta, de modo operativo, na reformulação do presente.

The theme of the MFF 2018 Conference (and program) is “The Future of the Future /Reinventing Narratives from Africa”.
It has been clear, in recent years, through multiple and diversified manifestations – theoretical, philosophical, aesthetical, economic, social and cultural – a desire to formulate new narratives that aspire to confront and reconfigure old models and stereotypes and aim to bring to the forefront alternative concepts and visions that want to reframe long acquired perceptions about the continent.
Many historical factors can help explain the emergence of this trend (the collapse of ideologies, globalization, new technologies, demographic and generational changes, etc.) but regardless of the diverse and debatable analytical points of views, what empirically stands out is a surge of manifestations, proposals, projects and initiatives, in many different areas and contexts (literature, film, design, architecture, fashion, technology, arts, etc.), that undoubtedly convey an aspiration to change established narratives and forge new identities and imaginaries. In this perspective, the “afro-futurism” movement is a clear example (even if controversial) of how the “future” is back as a powerful and operative tool to disrupt old conventions, confront the present and tap into the uncharted 21st century territory.
“The Future of the Future /Reinventing Narratives from Africa” Conference tries to echo this contemporary trend through a series of presentations and debates that aim to engage the Mozambican cultural and creative community in the global conversation that is taking place across the continent and the African diaspora.
